In addition to basic Patternmaking Tools and Supplies the fabric and notions you will need for this class depends on the type of garments you wish to make. So the first step is to make a list of the various garments. You may want to print out the Design Variations as a guide. The video below is a description some of these fabrics and notions.
Susan of the Fabric Depot is very helpful in determining the supplies needed for swimsuits and lingerie. In the descriptions below I have included images and links to supplies from her company.
Ball Point Machine Sewing Needles - You need these when sewing elastic.
Gutermann 100% Polyester Thread - I initially used Coats Dual Duty Plus thread but it kept snagging and breaking when I was sewing the elastic. Since then I have switched to the Gutermann thread and the problem has not reoccurred.
Muslin - yardage varies with the trial garments you wish to make but one or two yards should suffice. An alternative is any woven fabric such as an old bed sheet.
Cording - For testing trial muslin bikinis you can use any kind of cording or heavy string. If you plan to make corded swimsuits, you may want to purchase 1/8" round cord elastic.
1/4" Elastic for Leg Openings - I would recommend buying 5 to 10 continuous yards rather than the packages available in sewing stores. I have too many short ends from these packages. I would also recommend you buy elastic suitable for swimsuits.
1/2" or 3/4" Elastic for Waistbands - If you are making swimsuits, you might want to get a nice supply of this by the yard as described for the 1/4" elastic.
Tricot Bonded Foam - You may or may not select to use foam for the support it provides for the bust line. In my experience it seems to work regardless of the bra cup size of the wearer. For smaller sizes, it enhances the figure and for larger sizes it provides good support. For larger bust sizes I find it helpful to use the foam even in the trial muslin versions.
Lycra - This is the fabric I use for swimsuits. It comes in many different colors, solids and prints. The yardage you need will depend on whether you are creating a small two piece swimsuits where 1/2 yard may suffice to a full length gown where 2-1/2 to 3 yards may be required.
For lingerie there are any number of different notions and fabrics that can be used. The photo to the left shows a thong made using bra strap elastic, sliders, rings, and crocheted neckline elastic. Other options include using picot edged bra band plush elastic for both waist bands of fitted shorts and leg openings.
I suggest browsing through the websites of online Bramaking Supplies for ideas.
